Best Building Techniques in 1v1.LOL

Shooting is half the game. Building is the other half. And if you can't build, you lose, it doesn't matter how good your aim is. The good news: you only need about 6 techniques to cover 95% of fights. Let's go through them, in order of how often you'll use them.

The Wall Block

The most important move in the game. Take damage β†’ place wall. That's it. That's the move.

Your wall is 100 HP at base. A single shotgun shot won't break it. That's a full second of protection while you reload, heal, or think. If you're not spamming Q the moment someone shoots you, you're losing fights you should've won.

  • Place the wall between your body and the shooter, not at your feet
  • Face directly at the enemy when placing, it'll auto-align
  • If you're getting shot from above, add a roof too
πŸ’‘ Pro Tip

Keep your Q finger hovering at all times. Treat it like a reflex, not a decision.

The Ramp Push

The fastest way to close distance and get height advantage. Build a ramp at your feet, run up it, build another one, keep going. You gain speed, height, and protection, all at once.

When you're on top, drop down behind them and shotgun the back of their head. It's rude. It works.

How to Counter a Ramp Push

  • Shoot the base of the ramp. The whole thing collapses, they fall, you steal the height
  • Build your own ramp into theirs: meet them in the middle and force a shotgun trade
  • Box up and edit a window: shoot them from below while they build

The Turtle (Box)

Four walls and a roof around you. Instant safety. Use it when you're low HP, need to reload, or just want to reset the fight.

Every pro player turtles. It's not "camping", it's smart play. What matters is what you do inside the box: heal up, swap to your best weapon, plan your next edit.

⚠️ Warning

Don't turtle forever. A good opponent will push and trap you. You have about 3-5 seconds in the box before it becomes a death sentence.

The 90

The move every sweat uses. You stack height while protecting yourself from all sides. Once you learn it, you'll feel like you unlocked a new game.

The Sequence

  • Place a wall in front of you
  • Turn 90Β° left or right
  • Jump + place a ramp
  • Turn again
  • Place a wall for protection
  • Repeat

It looks complicated. It's not, it's muscle memory. Practice in a bot match or a custom 1v1 lobby. Give it 200-300 reps before you expect to hit it in a real match. Every. Single. Pro. Player. Was bad at this at first.

The Wall Peek + Edit

This is the move that makes you look like a cheater. You're behind a wall. You can't be shot. But you can shoot out.

The Sequence

  • Place a wall facing the enemy
  • Press G to enter edit mode
  • Click the bottom-middle tile (and one more if you need)
  • Press G to apply
  • Shoot through the gap
  • Immediately Q a fresh wall to close it up

Once you get this under a second, you've crossed from beginner to intermediate. Do it 10 times in a single fight and opponents will rage quit.

The Cone Defense

Your roof tile. Protects you from above, essential when someone's ramping on you. If you hear building above your head, slap a roof down immediately.

Combine with a wall in front for a mini-box. Cheap, fast, saves your life.

The Triple Edit (Advanced)

You're in a box. Opponent is outside. You want to surprise them. Edit your wall to show a gap, they peek to shoot through, you close it and open a different spot. They aim at the wrong angle, you blast them.

This is mind games. You're not editing to shoot, you're editing to bait them. Once you're comfortable with basic edits, start playing with timing and fake-outs.

Common Mistakes

  • Over-building. One wall and a ramp usually wins. You don't need a castle
  • Building in a straight line. Predictable = dead. Mix ramps with 90-degree turns
  • Forgetting the roof. If someone's above you, you need a cone or roof. NOW
  • Editing without a plan. Every edit should end with you shooting. Don't just open windows for fun
  • Panicking under pressure. When you're low HP, turtle first: think second. Don't push a fight you're losing

How to Actually Practice

You don't get better by grinding ranked games. You get better by drilling:

  • Bots Practice Match: 10 minutes a day. Teaches you fast placement without pressure
  • Custom 1v1 with a friend: Play slow, let yourself fail the 90, rebuild, repeat
  • Watch pros: Seriously. YouTube "1v1.LOL pro montage" and just watch the builds. Steal what looks good
  • Record yourself: Even just vibes-watching your own replays reveals mistakes you didn't notice in the moment
Every missed 90. Every dropped ramp. Every panic turtle. That's XP. The only way to get good is to embarrass yourself 500 times first.
